As Campbell Craig observed at the time, foreign countries would be affected by the outcome of the 2004 American presidential election, “far more than [by] the outcome of their own elections”1. An exaggeration, perhaps, but nonetheless the United States remains today the sole global superpower capable of exerting such a strong influence over international relations and intra-state policy. World attention therefore focuses on America and the campaign for the White House, in what looks to be an historical and precedent setting race.
